The optimal surgical approch to patients with carotid artery disease undergoing open heart surgery remains controversial.The dangers of cerebral infarction in patients with carotid vascular disease during cardio-pulmonary bypass have led to the formulation of a combined surgical approach. A combined approch for the treatment of carotid and coronary disease was first described by Bernard (1972) and later by Urschel (1976).
